Eric C. Boughman
Expert in Healthcare and Technology Law | Circuit Court Certified MediatorEric Boughman heads the firm's healthcare practice, bringing a wealth of expertise to complex legal challenges faced by businesses and professionals in the healthcare sector. Eric is also skilled in dispute resolution across a broad range of industries. As a Circuit Court Certified Mediator, Eric helps resolve intricate disputes with a balanced approach that emphasizes both technical proficiency and strategic, interest-based negotiation. Eric maintains an active mediation practice with an average of 4 to 6 mediations per month, generally focusing on resolving complex legal issues.
Eric began his career as a commercial litigator, representing a diverse range of clients from Fortune 500 companies to local business owners, physician group practices, and tech startups. His extensive litigation experience includes cases involving contract breaches, corporate disputes, third-party payer audits and disputes, real estate transactions, business divorces, business torts, intellectual property issues, fiduciary claims, professional licensing, and asset protection and preservation.
With a significant portion of his practice dedicated to the healthcare and technology industries, Eric recognized the need for specialized legal services tailored to these rapidly evolving fields. He earned a post-graduate Certificate in Health Law and subsequently expanded his practice to provide a comprehensive suite of services, including regulatory compliance, transactional support, and general counsel for healthcare and technology companies. Beyond healthcare, Eric has gained the trust of other professional advisors, including accountants, lawyers, and judges, who rely on his expertise to navigate complex legal landscapes. He represents their businesses, with a strong focus on business management and corporate governance issues.
Recognizing the ever-present risk of litigation, Eric's practice focuses on advising clients and their counsel nationwide on asset protection to safeguard their interests. He frequently educates legal professionals on asset protection techniques.
A prolific writer and speaker, Eric has contributed to multiple esteemed publications, including American Bar Association journals, The Florida Bar Journal, Forbes, Daily Business Review, Accounting Today, Kiplinger, Financial Advisor Magazine, Law360, and CEO World. He co-authored The Law of Artificial Intelligence (ABA, 2019) and is working on a second book focused on advising healthcare professionals.
Eric's legal acumen is recognized by Martindale-Hubbell with an AV–Preeminent rating and by Best Lawyers in America. He has also received accolades in Orlando Magazine and Orlando Family Magazine.
Eric graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School, where he was a contributing author to the Minnesota Practice Series Business Law Deskbook and argued before the Minnesota Supreme Court as a student. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland while serving in the U.S. Air Force, with tours in Saudi Arabia and Turkey during Operations Desert Storm and Provide Comfort. He holds post-graduate certificates in Health Law from Brandeis School of Law and in Mediation and Conflict Management from Harvard Law School's Program on Negotiation.
Eric is admitted to practice in Florida and Nevada, as well as the U.S. Tax Court and various other courts nationwide pro hac vice.
Eric is deeply involved in both professional and community service. He serves on the Florida Bar’s 18th Judicial Circuit Grievance Committee as vice-chair and is a member of the Unlicensed Practice of Law Committee. He also sits on the Board of the Seminole County Inns of Court and has received numerous awards for his pro bono service, including the Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award and the Seminole County Bar Association Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award.
As general counsel for Rotary District 6980 and a past President of the Rotary Club of Lake Mary, Eric remains active in community service. His service was recognized with a District "Service Above Self" Award. He also serves as legal counsel to the Paralyzed Veterans of America (Central Florida Chapter) and is a member of their advisory board. Eric and his family, long-time supporters of animal welfare causes, especially with Franklin's Friends, were the recipients of the first-ever "Franklin's Friends of the Year award in 2017." Their family holiday RumBalls fundraiser has raised over $60,000 for animals in need. Recently, the family added a second rescue dog, Max, whom their dog Chloe tolerates but the rest of the family loves.
Community service is a core family value. His daughter is the "sock girl" of Seminole County – an endeavor strongly supported by the entire family and both children serve on Franklins Friends’ Youth Ambassador Panel.
Eric lives in Longwood, Florida, with his wife, Heather, their two children, Peyton and Ethan, and their dogs, Chloe and Max. In his spare time, he enjoys participating in outdoor adventures, cheering on his kids, and engaging in community activities. Eric and Heather have been together for over 25 years.
